NTT DOCOMO selects Alcatel-Lucent to build IP network supporting LTE

NTT DOCOMO has selected Alcatel-Lucent to build NTT DOCOMO's Internet protocol (IP) network supporting its LTE services.

Alcatel-Lucent's7750 Service Routers will enable Japanese mobile operator NTT DOCOMO to improve speed and capacity of its IP network to address growing demand for mobile broadband services such as streamed movies and music, and multi-player video gaming in the country.

Based on its High Leverage Network architecture, Alcatel-Lucent's IP portfolio is ideally suited to address the demands of NTT DOCOMO's customers for increasingly sophisticated, high-bandwidth mobile services over the company's LTE Network.

Alcatel-Lucent's IP routers features integrated LTE Security Gateway functionality with IPSec (IP security) technology, a key requirement to securely transport LTE data for NTT DOCOMO. These routers can be expanded as customer demand grows.

They are efficient, using less space and power while increasing network performance. This characteristic is attractive in the Japanese market, where the power grid is under pressure due to electricity supply constraints and space is always at a premium.

"Our IP service routing technology provides an unrivaled solution for NTT DOCOMO to expand both capacity and performance of their network while keeping space and power consumption at the lowest level and offering a variety of easy options to upgrade the network as needed to address shifting demand," said Martin Jordy, president and managing director of Alcatel-Lucent Japan.

Alcatel-Lucent has partnered with Fujitsu to put together an offer for NTT DOCOMO's networking needs. Fujitsu proposed the 7750 SR as the best platform to address NTT DOCOMO's requirements. Through the collaboration with Fujitsu, Alcatel-Lucent will deploy its IP/MPLS solution and Security Gateway capabilities, based on the company's 7750 SR.
